Dear Sophie,
I am an H-1B visa holder and I want to travel abroad temporarily. However, due to the uncertainty of reentry to the US, I’m concerned about my ability to promptly return to the US after traveling.
You had previously mentioned that there is a domestic visa stamping program available for certain types of work visas. Can you provide more information on this program and whether it’s available for H-1B visa holders?
Best regards,
[Your Name]
Dear [Name],
Thank you for reaching out! I’m happy to help clarify the domestic visa stamping program.
The Department of State (DOS) has launched a pilot program, which allows certain H-1B visa holders to renew their visas without traveling abroad. This program is available through an online portal and does not require an in-person appointment at a US embassy or consulate.
To be eligible for this program, you must meet the following criteria:
- You must have a valid and approved H-1B petition.
- You must have maintained your H-1B status and it has not expired.
- You must intend to reenter the US in H-1B status after a temporary period abroad.
- You must be a principal H-1B visa holder, not a dependent holding an H-4 visa.
If you qualify for this program, you can apply online through the DOS domestic renewal of H-1B portal. The application process involves submitting Form DS-160 (Nonimmigrant Visa Application), paying the $205 nonrefundable processing fee, and mailing your passport, photos, and required documents for processing.
The processing time is expected to be six to eight weeks from the time your passport and required documents are received by the DOS. All applications will be processed no later than May 1, 2024.
Please note that this program is a pilot initiative, and its availability may change in the future. It’s recommended that you work with an immigration attorney to assess whether you qualify for this program and help you apply.
Additionally, I encourage you to submit your comments to the DOS by April 15. After reviewing the public comments, the DOS may expand the domestic visa stamping program to include all types of work visas, making it easier for you to travel abroad and return to the US.
Best regards,
Sophie
